Concrete blocks which are also known as concrete masonry units (CMU) have advantages over brick and stone masonry. What Are The Different Types of Concrete Blocks Used While Constructing A Building?

  • Solid concrete blocks
Solid concrete blocks are widely used in construction but they are very heavy in weight because they are manufactured from dense concrete.   • Hollow Concrete Blocks

  • Concrete Stretcher Blocks

  • Concrete Corner Blocks

  • Jamb Concrete Blocks

Jamb concrete blocks are used when there is an elaborate window opening in the wall. They are connected to stretchers and corner blocks. For the provision of double-hung windows, jamb blocks are very useful to provide space for the casing members of the window.

  • Concrete Pillar Blocks

Pillar block is also known as a double corner block. Generally, these are used when two ends of the corner are visible. In the case of piers or pillars, these blocks are widely used.

  • Partition Concrete Block

Partition concrete blocks are generally used to build partition walls. Partition blocks have a larger height than their breadth. The hollow part is divided into two to three components in the case of partition blocks.

  • Lintel Blocks

A lintel block or beam block is used for the purpose of provision of a beam or lintel beam. A lintel beam is generally provided on the top portion of doors and windows, which bears the load coming from the top. Concrete lintel blocks have a deep groove along the length of the block. After placing the blocks, this groove is filled with concrete along with reinforcement.

  • Paving blocks

Paving blocks are generally square or rectangular in size and these blocks are constructed with reinforced cement concrete. Paving blocks are normally laid in the shoulder part of the highway and these are painted with the paint of high visibility to attract automobile drivers. These types of blocks are rigid in nature so it increases the probability of road accidents. Paving blocks are also used in parks, parking areas, or sometimes in the footpath of any road. The general dimension of the paving block is 60 mm.
